CHARACTERIZATION OF THE OZARK AQUIFER FOR AN INDUSTRIAL AND PUBLIC WATER SUPPLY
STE. GENEVIEVE COUNTY, MISSOURI

LBG has completed testing of the Ozark Aquifer for an industrial and public water supply in northern Ste. Genevieve County MO with the installation of two test wells of 2000 and 1200 feet deep respectively.

MAJOR PROJECT OBJECTIVES

  • Over 600 gallons per minute sustained yield
  • Determine aquifer's hydraulic properties - coduct extensive aquifer pumping tests
  • Model the capture zone to determine potential to impact neighbor's ground-water supply
  • Test water quality to determine if it meets public and industrial water supply standards
  • Analyze water chemistry for potential treatment

LBG’s client sought a sustainable water supply for a project with an expected life of over 100 years. Even though this facility is located next to the Mississippi River an obvious potential source of water, LBG saw that expensive treatment of the river water and limited space to build a treatment facility on the floodplain were hindering factors.

Looking for options other than the river, LBG carried out an exhaustive scientific literature study to determine what was known about the quality of groundwater in the Ozark Aquifer, a bedrock unit made of many types of rocks totaling approximately 2000 feet in thickness. LBG determined the potential was good to find a sustainable yield of sufficient quality.

HYDROGEOLOGIC FINDINGS

  • Yield high enough for demand
  • Water requires minor treatment to meet industrial specification
  • Aquifer thickness 2000 feet
  • Limestone, Dolomite, Sandstone and Shale
  • Formations encountered – Plattin Limestone through the Potosi Dolomite inclusive.
  • Fresh water down to the Eminence Fm.

PERMITS AND PAPERWORK MANAGEMENT

  • LBG wrote detailed work plan, drilling and well specifications
  • Wrote and obtained permit from MDNR
  • Prepared contract language for subcontractors
  • Wrote request for bid document
  • Prequalified drilling contractors for invitation to bid
  • Analyzed bids and selected winning drilling firm
  • Managed invoices, insurance and other administration of subcontractors
