WILLIAMS PIPE LINE BURN POND SUPERFUND SITE SIOUX FALLS, SOUTH DAKOTA

Quick action and the application of innovative investigative techniques and remediation technologies have resulted in considerable cost savings at a Superfund site now listed on the NPL. LBG succeeded in negotiating a "no action" alternative for EPA CERCLA enforcement, allowing site remediation to be conducted under far less stringent state authority.

The Williams Pipe Line Burn Pond Site in Sioux Falls, South Dakota is a disposal pit adjacent to a gas pipe line terminal. Prior to the site being placed on the NPL, LBG initiated an RI/FS utilizing Rotosonic drilling techniques that allowed the investigation to be completed in half the normal time. Immediate installation of a ground-water recovery and treatment system enabled the remediation to be completed under less costly state jurisdiction instead of EPA Superfund guidelines.

LBG evaluated the likely effectiveness of using emerging technologies through the EPA Bioremediation Field Initiative and SITE Program. The remediation system employed consists of 2,700 feet of perimeter recovery trenches feeding into air strippers, seven bioventing systems and six air sparging/vapor extraction systems.

In addition to providing construction supervision, LBG continues to monitor operations of the remediation system. Litigation support and expert testimony in support of the client's insurance claim resulted in a successful settlement.
